ASUU EXTENDS STRIKE BY 4 WEEKS

The past 6 months have seen about 1.9 million Nigerian students stranded due to the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The strike, however, does not seem to be ending soon as the union announced a 4-week roll-over of the strike action.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on August 1, 2022, released a statement after holding an emergency meeting on the 31st of July. In the statement, ASUU maintained its grounds for not calling the strike until The Federal Government satisfies its demands. They claimed that the Federal Government seems not to take them seriously. Therefore, they gave a further 4-week extension to the Federal Government to resolve the crisis consequently extending the strike by 4-weeks.
It should be noted that about a week ago, the Nigeria Labour Congress embarked on a solidarity protest for ASUU and all grudging academic bodies. ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022. Academic bodies such as COEASU (Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union), NASU(Non-Academic Staff Union), and SSANU (Senior Staff Academic Staff Union) also went on strike to press home their demands. With no preferable solution by the Federal Government, the education system of Nigeria has become crippled. ,
